When Audio Customization Solves a Real Problem
Most custom IEM cables focus on sound refinement, ergonomics, or aesthetics.
This project was different.
One of our clients approached us with a very specific request: a compact mono-summing IEM cable for driving, navigation, and phone use while keeping one ear free to hear the surrounding environment.
The goal was simple:
- combine left and right audio channels into a single earphone
- preserve a proper full-range signal
- keep the cable lightweight and comfortable for daily use
At first glance, it sounds straightforward. In practice, properly summing stereo channels into mono requires careful signal handling and resistance implementation.
That immediately made the project far more interesting from an engineering perspective.
What Makes a Mono-Summing Cable Different?
The client requested:
- a 30 cm (1ft) adapter cable
- MMCX connection for a single IEM
- 3.5 mm female termination
- safe stereo-to-mono summing
- compact everyday ergonomics
Many inexpensive mono adapters simply short the channels together directly. While this may sometimes work, it is not an ideal solution for long-term use.
For this build, we implemented a passive resistor network inside the adapter section to properly combine the channels while protecting the source device.
The entire structure was assembled and soldered by hand.
Why Off-the-Shelf Solutions Often Fall Short
During development, we explored existing mono adapter solutions available online.
Most shared the same issues:
- oversized housings
- poor ergonomics
- unreliable soldering
- generic plastic construction
- minimal attention to signal implementation
The goal here was not simply making the adapter function. It was creating something refined enough to become part of a daily audio setup. This is exactly the type of project that rarely appears in mass-market audio, but makes perfect sense for one specific listener.
Designing the Cable
The cable was built on the foundation of our lightweight Danube platform. Several priorities shaped the final design.
Compact Ergonomics
The client planned to use the cable daily while driving and walking, so the build needed to remain:
- lightweight
- soft
- low-profile
- comfortable for extended sessions
We intentionally avoided oversized hardware and unnecessary weight.
Handcrafted Assembly
Like every Zikman cable, this build was assembled entirely by hand.
That includes:
- conductor preparation
- resistance implementation
- soldering
- braiding
- connector finishing
- final testing
Even relatively small projects often require significantly more manual work than most people expect. Especially when the goal is building something more refined than a typical off-the-shelf solution.
Built Around Real Listening Habits
The most interesting part of this project was that it started from a real everyday use case rather than abstract specifications.
The client regularly uses only one earphone while driving in order to:
- hear GPS directions
- listen to music
- stay aware of traffic and surroundings
Instead of relying on awkward workarounds, the idea was to create a cleaner and more comfortable dedicated solution around those listening habits.
To us, that is what personalization in audio is really about.

Client Feedback
“Excellent!! You have no idea how excited I am about this. It looks amazing!”
We especially appreciated how collaborative the process became throughout the project.
Why Projects Like This Matter
Many listeners have highly specific needs that standard audio products simply do not address.
Projects like this allow us to explore:
- unusual signal paths
- practical ergonomic solutions
- niche listening scenarios
- highly personalized builds
Sometimes the most interesting ideas come from solving one very specific problem properly.
Conclusion
At Zikman, projects like this remind us why we enjoy custom audio so much. Not because every cable needs to be complicated. But because sometimes a simple idea deserves to be executed properly.
This cable may look minimal from the outside, but behind it sits:
- engineering
- craftsmanship
- experimentation
- problem-solving
That is what personalized audio means to us.
